Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee proposed dropping routine dental care from the state's Medicaid coverage, though some emergency procedures would still be covered. If the cuts are enacted, patients will turn to hospital emergency departments for dental care, driving up health care costs, R.I. Dental Association President Barbara Cavicchio said. “A cleaning is a relatively inexpensive thing. But if you wait you’ll have gum disease, a tooth that needs extraction or an abscess. Emergency rooms will bear the burden," Cavicchio said.
