A national effort is under way to recognize schools that have improved student nutrition before new federal standards go into effect July 1. Kevin Concannon, undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer sciences at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, visited an Iowa school last week as part of that effort and compared efforts to curb childhood obesity to a previous campaign to reduce smoking rates. "If we do it right with kids today, we can bring them up eating healthier," he said.
