The Winnemem Wintu tribe in California is using GPS technology to plot its sacred sites. The project is especially important given that a proposal to increase a dam's height could endanger some of those sites. "For many Indian tribes, nobody has ever mapped their territories with their perspective as the central focal point," said geographer Anne McTavish. "Most of the maps were created by people -- linguists, scholars, developers -- who had other agendas."
