Teachers should help students develop their listening skills, writes instructional coach David Ginsburg. He writes in this blog post that some students are not motivated to speak during class, even when their grades are tied to participation. Tallying participation time can be distracting to teachers and encourage students to speak rather than listen, he writes. Ginsburg suggests teachers model listening skills, encourage students to listen to each other and avoid rewarding students for participation.
