Seed developer Chromatin is developing a variety of high-yield, drought-tolerant sorghum in anticipation of surging global demand for biomass crops, CEO Daphne Preuss said at the Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Demand for biomass crops worldwide is expected to reach 600 million tons per year by 2020, and 1 billion tons by 2030, Preuss said. Of that, 80 million tons will go to cellulosic fuels, 170 million tons to U.S. heating and power, 50 million tons to the EU's power and 150 million tons to biobased chemicals.
