Health care organizations, Medicaid, insurers and the March of Dimes are raising awareness that reducing early elective births will help prevent respiratory, digestive and even brain complications in newborns while lowering costs associated with NICU stays. There is "an explosion of brain development in the last few weeks of gestation," said Billie Short, division chief of NICU at Children's National Medical Center in Washington.
