Outside the U.S., health care providers are using social-networking tools more for patient education and care monitoring than for marketing, according to a report released by IT firm CSC. U.S. providers are hesitant to reach out to patients through social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter due to the possibility of HIPAA violations, says Caitlin Y. Lorincz, an analyst with CSC's Global Institute for Emerging Healthcare Practices. "I think the U.S. really has a lot to learn from its global peers in terms of using social media in health care," she said.
