A 62-year-old man who became infected with necrotizing fasciitis after contaminated water washed over a blister on his foot nearly lost not only his leg but his life. Doctors treated the man, who has diabetes, with eight rounds of aggressive surgical debridement, antibiotics, rehydration, blood transfusions and skin grafts. The patient's organs failed twice during his 65-day treatment, requiring dialysis and a ventilator to help him breathe.
