An SCCM report found 1.7% of the U.S. research budget goes toward critical care, but caring for critically ill patients accounts for 11% of national health spending. "If the research dollars for critical care were equal to the burden, our ability to increase patient care while controlling costs would improve exponentially," said SCCM president Dr. Clifford Deutschman. The report listed four key ways to improve critical care research, including better communication and infrastructure, changing the specialty's silo-education approach, and accounting for complexity in critical illness.
