As consumer demand for smartphones and tablet computers continues to rise, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will increase its capacity for making chips with 28-nanometer features and kick off its efforts to fabricate 20nm ICs earlier than expected. Without giving specific figures on its planned capital expenditure budget for this year, the silicon foundry revealed that it will invest $11.86 billion in new production facilities in Tainan, Taiwan, during the next couple of years.
