Feather picking is rare in wild birds but occurs more commonly in caged birds, and there may be medical or psychological problems behind the obsessive habit, writes veterinarian David Tayman. Infections such as psittacosis, which causes respiratory disease in humans, may underlie feather picking, but psychological problems, such as fear of other pets, noises and lack of enrichment can also lead a bird to pick its feathers, Dr. Tayman notes.
