Roseline Amondi, a restaurant owner in Nairobi, Kenya, recounts how her new cookstove -- powered by biogas harnessed from the community bathroom -- has reduced costs to one-tenth of previous levels, when she burned wood. A coordinator for the Kenya Cookstove Program of the German aid agency GIZ says a program that has distributed 1.3 million clean cookstoves since 2006 saves about 1.4 million tons of firewood annually, or 78,000 hectares of forest.
