Consumers who upgrade to the next iteration of Microsoft's Windows operating system will find they no longer are able to automatically play DVDs or Blu-ray discs using Microsoft applications. The software giant announced it will discontinue support for disc-based video in the version of Windows Media Player that will debut with Windows 8. "Our telemetry data and user research shows us that the vast majority of video consumption on the PC ... is coming from online sources," Microsoft's Bernardo Caldas and Linda Averett wrote in a blog post.
