Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey involving 972 children with asthma showed that 53% of them were exposed to secondhand smoke between 2005 and 2010. Researchers reported increased odds of three or more visits to a doctor or emergency department due to wheezing, sleep disturbance, and limited activity among those exposed to secondhand smoke. The findings were presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting.
