Researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore are studying the effects of various early-intervention techniques on the social and communication skills of children as young as age 1, who are considered at risk of developing autism. Programs take place in classrooms where clinicians work with small groups of children using techniques -- such as speaking in unison and combining verbal and visual instructions -- designed to offer specific benefits for young children with the disorder.
