High acidity in sports and energy drinks irreversibly erodes tooth enamel and leads to decay, according to a study published in the journal General Dentistry. People who consume the drinks should chew sugar-free gum or rinse their mouth with water and avoid brushing their teeth for at least an hour, said Academy of General Dentistry spokeswoman Jennifer Bone.
