Overweight pregnant women have a 19% chance that their newborns will need NICU care, compared with a 15% risk overall, according to statistics from the Women's Health Division of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in South Carolina. According to the hospital's data, women who had a cesarean birth weighed an average of 20 pounds more than those who had vaginal births, and overweight women were more likely to have bigger babies.
