The eight biggest phone companies together shed 70,000 broadband customers in the quarter ended June 30, while the four largest public cable providers added 290,000 customers, according to this article. The loss was the first for phone companies, whose DSL speeds in many areas are 20 times slower than some cable operators' download speeds of 100 Mbps.
