Overweight and obese type 2 diabetes patients who followed an intensive diet and exercise program showed a 12% increase in total adiponectin and a nearly 10% improvement in good cholesterol levels, according to a study in the Journal of Lipid Research. Study author Dr. Christie Ballantyne, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Methodist Hospital in Houston, said diet and exercise can improve the function of adipose tissue, the heart, muscles and the vascular system, measures that are not seen by looking at the number on the scale.
