Teachers say financial hardship and parental apathy are among the reasons for the increasing number of children showing up hungry at schools in the United Kingdom. Nearly one-third of the teachers responding to a recent survey said they are taking food to their students, with 1 in 6 saying they do that weekly. "It is a shocking indictment of this government that in 21st century Britain young children are forced to rely on teacher handouts," shadow children's minister Sharon Hodgson said.
