About 19,000 students in grades K-8 in Birmingham City Schools in Alabama this year are working with First in Math, an interactive computer program that covers basic skills through algebra. Produced by Suntex International, First in Math uses a game format and offers immediate feedback -- with electronic awards -- to keep students engaged. The district's students solved 4 million math problems with the program in a one-month period, including time spent both at home and at school, the company reported.
