A study in the journal Nature Communications found that the algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii may break down other plant materials and use them as food sources when exposed to food deprivation. "Our study for the first time demonstrates that an organism which is capable of performing photosynthesis can digest cellulose as well," said study co-author Lutz Wobbe.
