Hank Thompson knows what it takes to run a successful U.S. Open -- he has been championship director three times in the past five years -- but next year's tournament at the Merion Golf Club in Havertown, Pa., which is half the size of normal U.S. Open venues, presents a whole new set of challenges.
"The lack of space here and what had to be done to expand the footprint is certainly unique," Thompson says. "We've never had a site where we've had to go to entities outside the club to rent space to build facilities."
