Palliative care experts say physicians who care for terminally ill patients often suffer as well, with frustration and feelings of helplessness because they cannot make people well again. Dr. Michael K. Kearney of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, who told a conference that physicians can develop burnout and compassion fatigue, suggests doctors practice "mindfulness meditation" to help relieve their stress and refocus on their patients.
