Partial excision of the proximolateral matrix combined with phenolic ablation has a high long-term success rate for the treatment of ingrown toenails, according to a study published in Annals of Family Medicine. Removing a 3-millimeter-wide section of nail plate and appropriate curettage can prevent nail spicules and recurrence, the study authors said. Only one patient in the 225-patient study experienced recurrence during a two-year follow-up period.
