NASA's Messenger spacecraft found water ice on Mercury, around 100 billion to 1 trillion tons of it. The ice was found deep within craters close to Mercury's poles, as well as in the slightly warmer areas, where it is darker, which could be carbon-based molecules left behind when the ice vaporized. Scientists believe that the ice could have been brought by a comet that collided with Mercury within the past millions of years.
