Africa leads the U.S. and EU in the sheer number of mobile phone subscribers, and the continent trailed only South Asia in mobile adoption growth from 2000 to 2011, according to World Bank data. The adoption of mobile devices is having an effect on many industries, the organisation notes. "Africa is rapidly becoming an [information and communications technology] leader. Innovations that began in Africa -– like dual SIM card mobile phones or using mobile phones for remittance payments -– are now spreading across the continent and beyond," noted Tim Kelly, lead ICT policy specialist at the World Bank and an author of the report.
