Software-as-a-service offerings are being implemented in various parts of the enterprise, displacing installed software, Cormac Foster writes. The trend is being recognized by the big suppliers of enterprise software, some of which are putting their applications in a cloud and marketing them as SaaS. "To be true SaaS, a company needs to design the application from the ground up to support parallel development of multiple projects, invest millions in scalable and secure infrastructure, and have services that go beyond fixing what's broken," CrownPeak CEO Jim Howard said.
