Elementary-age children of Latino backgrounds gathered in a classroom on a recent Saturday to hear poems and literature by Latin Americans and do art projects as part of a program to promote Spanish literacy. The Spanish Heritage Academy -- offered by Harvard University's Cultural Agency Initiative and using Harvard's Pre-Texts curriculum -- includes students who either were born to immigrant parents or came to the U.S. at a young age and are losing their ability to speak Spanish. "Getting them to see that Spanish is a language of culture is a victory," said Obed Lira, a Harvard graduate student who helps teach the students.
