Foods that contain yeast, alcohol or sugar can lead to gas-generating ­fermentation in the gut; alcohol and rich foods can spark heartburn; and insufficient fruits and vegetables can lead to constipation, according to Dr. Nick Read. Meanwhile, eating undercooked meats or food that has been left at room temperature for too long can result in food poisoning. Read recommends staying well hydrated, eating plenty of fiber and staying active to avoid gastrointestinal distress.
