Policymakers in California, Kansas, Maine and New Hampshire are considering following Minnesota's lead in licensing specially trained dental hygienists to fill cavities, extract primary teeth and install crowns and spacers. Advocates say mid-level providers or dental therapists can help increase access to dental care and free up busy dentists to provide more complex services. Opponents, including the ADA, say there is no lack of providers.
