A University of Pennsylvania study found MRI scans can determine if a patient has Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia called frontotemporal lobar degeneration. A study in the journal Neurology compared the imaging tests with invasive procedures that measure biomarkers for the conditions, and the researchers said MRIs could be used to track disease progression as well as for diagnosis.
