Plastic surgeon C. Andrew Salzberg is among those who offer mastectomy and reconstruction in a single surgery when appropriate. Most post-mastectomy reconstruction is performed after a tissue expander has stretched the chest wall behind the pectoralis major muscle to make room for the implant. In the combined procedure, sterile tissue can be used to hold the implant in place. Insurance can cover the procedure for women with a strong genetic risk for breast cancer, but it may not be appropriate for women who will undergo chemotherapy or radiation.
