Many laws regulating the practice of medicine are out of date, leaving a gap in oversight of outpatient surgery clinics and medi-spas, experts say. Inadequately trained doctors and unlicensed practitioners have left some patients permanently disfigured, disabled or dead. The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities is pushing states to increase oversight and regulation. Meanwhile, patients should check doctors' credentials and facilities' certifications before undergoing cosmetic procedures.
