Students living in the University of Maryland's Language House spend 80% of their time speaking a language other than English, such as Spanish, French or Japanese. The immersion learning approach has steadily grown in popularity throughout the country, says Marty Abbott, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Adapting it to the collegiate lifestyle is another sign of that. "It's like study abroad without studying abroad," said Phoenix Liu, director of the program.
