The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released a draft recommendation urging physicians to counsel teens and school-aged children about the consequences of cigarette smoking and ways to handle peer pressure. USPSTF co-vice chair Michael LeFevre, M.D., said the task force found programs initiated by family physicians can help adolescents avoid smoking and added the AAFP's Tar Wars tobacco-free education program would meet the criteria outlined by task force members for such programs.
