A pack-mule robot designed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has passed its latest round of testing, DARPA leaders said. The Legged Squad Support System, a quadruped robot that researchers hope will serve as a pack mule for the U.S. military, passed a test held recently at Fort Pickett in Virginia that was recorded on video. The $54 million robot program faces three more tests in 2013 and two in 2014, and managers hope it will eventually be able to haul 400 pounds of gear over up to 24 miles of terrain with animal-like intuition.
