Several companies are close to reaching commercial-scale production of algae-based fuel this year, writes Katie Fehrenbacher. Solazyme is eyeing commercial-scale output through an Archer Daniels Midland facility in Clinton, Iowa. Sapphire Energy began churning out algae oil last summer and is aiming to produce up to 1.5 million gallons annually by 2014, while Synthetic Genomics acquired an 81-acre site in California's Imperial Valley to further test its technology, Fehrenbacher writes.
