The key factors that influence gait abnormality in people with diabetic neuropathy are ankle muscle strength and joint mobility, according to a study published in the journal The Foot, suggesting that preventive approaches could be of use. Researchers studied the gaits of 25 type 2 diabetes patients and 27 healthy people and found that the diabetes patients had shorter strides, slower speeds and longer duration of total support. “Clinical importance should be given to rehabilitation and maintenance of the functionality of the ankle complex," the researchers concluded.
