AT&T says it added 780,000 contract subscribers and increased total connections by 1.1 million in the fourth quarter. The carrier activated 10.2 million smartphones during the quarter, which helped increase wireless-data revenues by 14.7% compared with the year before. Overall, the company lost about $3.9 billion, a 42% improvement from 2011, which included a $10 billion charge on retirement-related costs.
