A decision by the Chinese government to incorporate passive optical networking into its grid modernization program would be a major boon for PON component and equipment vendors, according to a report from Ovum that estimates such a decision would pump as much as $2 billion into the market. While the State Grid Corporation of China has given no indication it is considering PON for its FTTx deployments, several vendors are already marketing PON products that are optimized for both the smart grid and triple-play communications services, Ovum said.
