Developers installed 293 offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity of 1,165 megawatts in Europe last year, up 33% from 2011 and bringing the region's total offshore wind capacity to 4,995 MW, according to the European Wind Energy Association. The U.K. has the highest offshore wind capacity in the region, followed by Denmark and Belgium, EWEA said. Offshore wind capacity is growing steadily, but "installation figures do not alter the fact that the wind industry is being hit by political and regulatory instability, the economic crisis, the higher cost of capital and austerity," said Justin Wilkes, EWEA's policy director.
