Defense spending will be cut under the "fiscal cliff" compromise reached by Congress, but not by as much as it would under the original sequestration formula, says Defense Department Comptroller Robert Hale. Under the original 2011 plan, the Pentagon's budget would be cut by $62 billion, but if sequestration goes forward, changes that were part of the recently passed legislation would cut defense spending by about $45 billion, Hale says.
