Samsung Electronics, itself a chipmaker, purchased $23.9 billion in semiconductors last year while Apple spent $21.4 billion, according to Gartner. Those two companies accounted for 15.2% of worldwide semiconductor revenue in 2012, the market research firm estimated. Trailing them were Hewlett-Packard and Dell, which spent less on chips last year than they did in 2011.
