Lawyers arguing on behalf of those who oppose marriage rights for
same-sex couples told the Supreme Court in a brief last week that
opposite-sex couples need marriage to limit out-of-wedlock, unplanned
pregnancies -- a problem same-sex couples do not encounter. It is
therefore reasonable to limit marriage rights to heterosexuals, the
lawyers contended. Briefs from those who support marriage equality
are expected to be filed next month.
