Milton Snavely Hershey had already found success with milk-infused caramel in the 1880s, but by the turn of the century, he "knew the future was chocolate," biographer Michael D’Antonio said. Hershey traveled to Switzerland to study chocolate making and in 1900 released the first Hershey bar, with a 5-cent price tag and the slogan "More sustaining than meat."
