Universal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus screening and decolonization is the most effective approach in reducing MRSA cases, according to a study in the journal Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control. Researchers observed an immediate reduction in the presence of MRSA in tested blood after the implementation of the protocol in 2007, with cases reaching zero for those hospitalized 48 hours or more in the second quarter of 2009 and for all bacteremias in the fourth quarter of 2010.
