Studies have shown that people with misaligned, missing or discolored teeth may have more difficulty finding a job and may be judged as untrustworthy or less intelligent than their peers with straight, healthy teeth. Nearly half of Americans do not have dental insurance, HHS data show, and few dentists are willing to take patients with Medicaid. Some advocates propose allowing specially trained dental hygienists to provide dental services, but the ADA has opposed the proposals.
