Allowing nonpsychiatric doctors to access inpatient psychiatric records stored in EMR systems could decrease the readmission rate of psychiatric patients in health care facilities, according to research in the International Journal of Medical Informatics. Securing psychiatric patients' records has unintended consequences such as hindering people from receiving better care, said Dr. Adam Kaplin, study leader and an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
