A research team in China has identified a specialized RNA component, called a riboswitch, that seems to render infectious bacteria resistant to certain antibiotics. The study was published in the journal Cell. Scientists at Fudan University's Shanghai Medical College are now testing the riboswitch mechanism to see if it responds to other types of antibiotics. Drug-resistant bacteria have become a serious medical problem in China and the world.
